Last night, after I had left the office for the evening, the watch officer upstairs received some welcome news from the South Pacific, of which I was duly informed this morning. In a naval/aerial battle between 23 August and 25 August, a Japanese troop convoy, attempting to re-inforce the South Pacific island of Guadalcanal against the American Marines, was repulsed by Yank naval forces. In addition to forcing the troop convoy to withdraw, the Americans managed both to sink a Japanese light aeroplane carrier and to destroy quite a few Japanese aeroplanes. On the debit side, one of the two Yank aeroplane carriers received a bit of a hiding herself.
As far as I can tell, neither War Bureau personnel, nor their Nipponjin or American counterparts, seem to have had a major influence on this battle. It appears to have been strictly a Muggle affair. I wonder, though, whether Fujiwara-no-Kiritsubo will continue to allow the Muggle Japanese to fight without magickal support, should reverses such as this become the norm. As for the Yanks, who knows when, or if, their wizards might intervene on behalf of their Muggle countrymen. I rather doubt the Yanks themselves know.

10 August 1942 Scarcely warded and in plaintext:
After several days of hacking manfully at the bureaucratic vines that grew during my absence from the office, I am, this evening, finally able both to return to the bosom of my family and to resume my former habit of commuting to and from work via gate.
I will deal with Theo's reported misbehaviour tomorrow evening, and have so informed him. Tonight, though, my bride and I have, on our respective agendas, far more urgent matters that require our mutual attention.

Once I had returned from warning my family to seek shelter in Cousin Ari's church, it took me much longer than I had expected to return to my family. Handing off my duties, or at least those that couldn't wait for my return, to my colleagues, was a bit time-consuming. However, once back at my office, I couldn't resist trying to update my understanding of the events about to occur. On the whole, the patterns of force along the leys had scarcely changed since my last survey. When I tried to scry, though, I simply could not see anything. Perhaps I was trying too hard. Understandable, given the peril my family faces, but hardly conducive to the necessary state of mind for a successful attempt at scrying. Miss Pryce, bless her, did take the time to draw a chart for Theo one more time, as he's closely linked to events, based on Magister Kyteler's remarks to me this morning. By the time she had drawn the chart and interpreted it, though, it was mid-afternoon.
Once I finally Floo'd home, much later than I had planned, I found some welcome surprises. Theo had left his little waggon for me, with a note saying that I would find it useful in moving my things to the church, much as he did in moving his and Heloise's things. Hortensia had also thoughtfully packed my personal effects for me. All that was left for me was to decide which of my books I would save. I filled Theo's waggon with as many books as it would carry (a poor sample of the whole of my library, I fear); then, luggage in hand, I set off for Ari's church.
I knew that my family would be waiting for me at the church. Knowing it, and feeling the relief that we were all together, in a place of shelter, are two entirely different things. And now the wait begins.
